Take a biologist, a physicist, and a computer scientist... shake them well! In alphabetic order:
Elmar Mair is a computer scientist and former member of the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, where he worked in the field of visual navigation and sensor fusion for resource limited mobile robots.
Wolfgang Stürzl was trained as a physicist before he became interested in studying navigation strategies and sensors of insects and their application to mobile robots.
Jochen Zeil is a neuroethologist with an interest in invertebrate compound eyes, vision and navigation. See http://biology.anu.edu.au/jochen_zeil/.
Acknowledgments
We thank Michael Suppa, former head of the Department of Perception and Cognition at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics (DLR), and Darius Burschka, Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science at the TUM, for their support of this project. The project was also supported by a grant from the Group of Eight Australia – Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme and by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence Scheme.
Special thanks also to Patrick Kammerlander, head of “Web Solutions - Patrick Kammerlander”, for his generous support with setting up the web-service.
